It has come to our attention that a variety of concerns have been expressed relating to our community playground, located in the area of W 6th Street. As a township, it remains our goal to provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for children, residents and families to enjoy when visiting our parks and playgrounds. In an effort to thoroughly address inquiries associated with the overall park/playground experience, representatives from our various departments met today to discuss existing concerns along with establishing a proactive approach to remedy.

Playground Signage: General Playground Rules will be created and posted at our playgrounds, reminding visitors of expectations and appropriate conduct. Signage will identify appropriate age recommendations for playground use.

Visible Presence: The Police will continue to monitor playground areas, addressing any issues that come up to maintain safety and order.

Trash and Debris: Our public works department will install an additional waste and recycling receptacle to encourage that all trash may be disposed of properly.

Communication with our public: In order to create an environment where our public may enjoy the amenities found within our community, it is important for clear communication to take place. It is not our intention to serve as disciplinarians of our youth as they venture through town. We need the support of our township families to instill a reminder to our youth that when in a public setting, there are expectations of appropriate conduct. When there are examples of aggressive behavior or misuse of playground equipment, serious injury may occur. When inappropriate language is used in the presence of other families and younger children, this is something that should be addressed and discouraged. As a reminder, our ordinance does include the dismissal of individuals from our parks should the situation merit. It is not something we want to enforce. Instead, we are asking all families to speak with your children highlighting the importance of appropriate conduct and behavior when leaving home to enjoy time with friends.

Thank you – Florence Township Recreation Department
