Preparations are well underway for the annual Florence Township Patriotic Celebration. As our parade route travels through the Village of Roebling, our community will be honoring our veterans and recognizing the 250th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy. We encourage and welcome any and all active military and veterans to take part in our flag raising ceremony and parade.
Our 2025 Grand Marshal is Donald “Don” Cammus. Don has resided in Florence Township for the past 40 years and has become a fixture in our community, serving in many volunteer capacities. As a founding member of the Roebling Museum and member of the Roebling Historical Society, Don along with many other charter members aided in preserving a treasure of the community in keeping the history of the John A. Roebling Company available for residents and visitors to enjoy. Don currently serves as the Treasurer of the Florence Township Board of Education, Treasurer of the Roebling Historical Society, Financial Officer of the Armed Forces Heritage Museum and offers pro bono tax services to elderly, disabled and indigent residents.
Residents may recognize Don Cammus during his early morning walks through town with his wife Ann, always picking up trash along their route in an effort to keep our neighborhoods clean. Serving as a community liaison, Don helps to coordinate the annual Roebling Carnival, Patriotic Celebration and has supported countless community outreach events and activities. During the Covid-19 pandemic, it was common to see this “masked man” handing out donated veggies and other items during our drive through events or many times to residents front porch, making sure that as many people as possible were receiving healthy options during a very challenging time. When recycling delays affected collection schedules, residents would awake to find their carts had been emptied and returned. We can not confirm or deny that Don was one of a small group that took to the streets to keep the recycling process going.
Don was reluctant to accept the designation as the 2025 Grand Marshal and rattled off several names of others that he would defer this honor. That gesture is a snapshot of who Don Cammus is and what he means to our community. Congratulations Don. It is our pleasure to honor you for your continued service to the Florence Township Community.
