Over the past month there have been multiple incidents regarding battery related fires. Two have taken place over the past month in Burlington County. These incidents are very dangerous and have caused damage to trucks and equipment. If this material enters the conveyors at recycling centers, there is risk of
Damage to the facility and potentially serious injury to staff. We are asking our residents to aide in our efforts for safe and responsible recycling practices.
Many rechargeable batteries are Lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small amount of space, and can be a fire risk if not used, stored, or disposed of properly. Batteries should NEVER be disposed of in your curbside recycling or trash.
Rechargeable batteries can be safely disposed of at many Lowes, Home Depot, and Staples stores. Residents can use the Call2Recycle store locator tool to find the nearest location accepting rechargeable batteries. https://www.call2recycle.org/locator/
Rechargeable batteries can also be brought to the County Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The facility is at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex, 22000 Burlington-Columbus Rd, Florence, NJ 08518. Hours: Tuesday-Friday 7am-3pm, Saturday 7am-12pm.
