In 1980, Gary Carugno teamed with his sister Joyce as owners of the Florence Hardware Store on West Front Street. For over 25 years, they worked together greeting countless residents as they cruised the aisles looking for various items for their homes and yards. Quickly Florence Hardware became the “Go To” place to stop in and find exactly what you needed. In 2006, Joyce Carugno took over the business and for almost twenty more years has maintained a wonderful relationship with all whom walk thru the door.
Like many small businesses, competing with big box stores and online ordering options creates challenges that are difficult to sustain. Where some local outlets have been forced to walk away, Florence Hardware has taken a different approach in an effort to continue forward. Joyce has adapted and begun to offer items such as antiques, collectibles, decorations, costume jewelry and second-hand items as a means to keep pace with the ever-changing times. Joyce uses social media to announce additions to the store and it has worked. It is not uncommon today to leave the store with a can of stain, a new batch of American flags and a collectible Life Magazine with John Lennon on the cover!
